Associates at IGS have earned an undergraduate degree and typically have some professional work experience. Associates are critical members of our case teams, providing analytic and research support. Associates deliver actionable insight and answers to our clients’ key questions by helping to design and conduct research, prepare analyses, and create client presentations.

Individuals interested in evaluating business strategies, assessing investment opportunities, and assuming a high level of responsibility will find the IGS associate role exciting and challenging. Members of the IGS team quickly gain in-depth knowledge of diverse markets by evaluating a broad range of industries for private equity firms and corporate clients.

IGS offers associates the opportunity for advancement within the firm and also helps associates shape their own professional development. Some associates opt to attend business school following their tenure with the company.

Associate Skill Development

IGS associates develop a strong set of fundamental business skills through their project work, including the following:

HARD SKILLS

  • Design and execute complex quantitative analysis, including market size and share analyses, through the interpretation of primary and secondary research
  • Develop proprietary interview guides and presentations to effectively address clients’ key issues
  • Conduct professional and thorough interviews with high-level executives
  • Locate and synthesize both qualitative and quantitative publicly-available information
  • Develop proficiency in database and spreadsheet modeling
  • Create client presentations, from storyboard to final deliverable

SOFT SKILLS

  • Operate in a team-based working and learning environment
  • Refine formal presentation skills through presentations in case team meetings and training events
  • Manage and motivate teams of researchers
  • Learn to work effectively under tight time frames and to stay focused under pressure
  • Train and mentor new associates

Associate Professional Development

Upon joining the firm, associates participate in a hands-on orientation program. More seasoned members of the firm provide an overview of the case process from start to finish, including designing and conducting research, data analysis, and Excel and PowerPoint training.

ONGOING TRAINING

In addition to “on-the-job” training, the firm delivers training sessions throughout the year, led by members of the management team and more experienced team members. Topics cover skill development areas including market modeling and more complex analyses, software tools tips and tricks, research strategies, and presentation skills.

PEER MENTORING

IGS pairs new associates with a peer mentor from the previous year’s associate class to provide practical, real-time guidance and training.

DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENTS

Associates receive frequent, informal feedback on their progress and development. These assessments provide coaching and actionable suggestions for improvement for an individual’s skill and career development.

QUALIFICATIONS

Consultants are responsible for managing projects and quickly evolve into case team leaders. Consultants supervise teams of associates in addition to designing, conducting and analyzing research on our clients’ key questions, including:

  • How large is the company’s market and at what rate is it growing?
  • What drives growth in this market?
  • How is the company positioned in the competitive landscape? 
  • How do customers rate the company relative to the competitors?
  • How realistic are the new market opportunities?

Individuals interested in partnering with clients to evaluate business strategies and assess investment opportunities will find the IGS consultant role exciting and challenging. Consultants quickly gain in-depth knowledge of diverse markets when evaluating a broad range of industries for private equity firms and corporate clients. In addition, consultants build and develop team and client management skills and are given a high level of responsibility for their projects and teams early in their tenure.

These assessments provide coaching and actionable suggestions for improvement for an individual’s skill and career development. In addition, consultants receive upward feedback from associates which provides guidance on an individual’s team and project management skills.
